  • New Pro Staff Writer- Bre Krueger, Professional Shed Dog Trainer

I was lucky enough to be brought into the wonderful world of dog training at the young age of 11.  I started working with a pro trainer at his kennel doing the grunt work.  By the time I was 13, I was doing a lot of the obedience and young dog training, and I also started running AKC Hunt Tests.  When I was 14 is when I fell in love with working with dogs.  The trainer that I had been working for gave me a very well-bred field golden with a lot of potential.  It was my job to train and get her ready for competitions.  He was there to help, but it was mainly on me.   I really started getting into training and working with my puppy (Amber).  I built a bond with this dog like no other.  She not only became my best pal, but she was my hunting buddy, and really the reason for me becoming a dog trainer.   Amber and I trained with many different people, and in many different avenues of competition including: Hunt Tests, Upland, Dock Dogs, Therapy Dogs, Field Trials, Obedience, Agility, and as of recently Shed hunting.  I really acquired a lot of training knowledge working with her.

When I was 16, I started offering in-home obedience and hunting training.  My business took off.  I always had 6-8 dogs in training.   I started giving all sorts of training demos at schools in the area.   I also got into different competitions quite heavily.  I kept a puppy out of Amber and continued to train my own dogs also.  I also started teaching group obedience classes at different training and boarding facilities in the area.

After high school, and some business courses, I decided to open a small natural pet supply and grooming shop in Winneconne, WI.  I made the decision to put training on the back burner while I got my new business up and rolling.  Taking a break from training lasted a whole month.  I started getting calls from someone that really wanted his new lab puppy trained for duck hunting.    He was very set on me training his dog because he didn’t want to have to send her off to a kennel for training.  Long story short… We got her into training, she became a star pupil that I really had fun running, testing, and training with.  We became great friends and training buddies, and I started right back into training hard core.

As of lately, I work at the shop in the mornings and train in the afternoons and evenings.  Amber is 10 years old now, and living the high life fetching ducks, flushing pheasants, and finding shed antlers.  My younger dogs and a lot of my client dogs are training and competing in Hunt Tests, Field Trials, and Shed Trials.  I run a few training groups, and take part in a few others working with all sorts of great trainers.  I really have a passion for working with dogs.  I am excited to become a part of the team at Everythingsheddog.com and Everythinggundog.com!

  • Shed Dogs Making Their Presence Known At DeerFest 2013!

We have all seen shed dog training grow in popularity over the past 3-4 years, and to our best estimate there has been 1000's% increase in the number of deer hunters that are actively participating and interested in finding shed antlers with their dogs.  This was clearly seen through the turn out at the 2013 Deerfest Hunting show in Oshkosh, WI (July 26-28th). Deerfest is any interesting lens to look through at the sport of "shed dogging" because it is a great compilation of deer hunters, land owners, deer managers, and general hunters.  If shed dog hunters can have a strong showing at this event then it is reasonable to conclude the sport is well on its way of becoming "mainstream" in deer hunting world.

    DeerFest 2013 Crowd

There was a lot of shed antler dog activity at Deerfest, including two of the most popular seminar speakers at the entire event were topics around shed dog training techniques.  These seminars were given by expert shed dog trainers Jeremy Moore and Tom Dokken, both of which have years of experience and expert knowledge at training dogs to find sheds.  I think all that attend these events would agree that these seminars where professional and very informative.  Make sure you check out the Everything Shed Dog YouTube Channel, as we will shortly have clips of these seminars so you can learn from home the great advice that was provided.

Both Jeremy Moore and Tom Dokken make top notch shed dog training products and both had booths at the Deerfest show.   Jeremy's brand is Dog Bone Hunter, which is comprised of shed antler training system and Deer Dog Game Recovery System (brand new release).  Tom Dokken's brands are Shed Dog Trainer and Dead Fowl Trainer, which are training products and systems for shed dog training and hunting dog training (both upland and waterfowl).  It is great to have these trainers and manufactures at the show to answer questions, provide training tips, and help grow the sport.  We can't say enough about how classy and what gentleman they are, we are very proud to be a selected retailer for their brands!

One of the events most popular events at Deerfest was the 1st leg of the NASHDA (North American Shed Hunting Dog Association) hunt test event.  There was over 20+ dogs registration for the event on Saturday, which consists of trainer directing their dogs through a course that has shed antlers planted in it and the dogs to find all the shed antlers "qualify".  This event is also timed and judged on speed, and we were hearing some very fast times from this event.  It appears there has been a lot of hard work and training going by what we are hear about the quick times.  The cool part is though, even if a dog is not quick, finding all the antlers is still qualifying.

Notable NASHDA info from Deerfest: A star studded field of Shed Dogs will be competed at Deerfest, July 27th.

    • 2 NASHDA open World Shed Dog Champions
    • 1 NASHDA Amateur Shed Dog Champion
    • 2 NASHDA World Junior Shed Dog Champions

All in all, it was such a great event for the deer hunting and shed dog community, we were happy to be a part of it.  We are already looking forward to Deerfest 2014!
